Women Produced Coffee Duo
This coffee celebrates the dedication and craft of women coffee farmers in Ethiopia and Colombia. From the highlands of Ethiopia to the mountains of Huila in Colombia, these producers cultivate exceptional coffees while supporting their families, communities and the traditions of their regions.
In Ethiopia, Tgsit Boru farms 2.8 hectares of land in the village of Beloya in the Kochere district of the Gedio zone. A mother of six, she grows traditional Ethiopian Arabica varieties including Kumie, Dega and Wilsho at around 1,705 metres above sea level, beneath the shade of native trees such as Cordia africana, Acacia and Ensete. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and home to an extraordinary diversity of Arabica varieties. Most coffee is still grown by smallholder farmers like Tgsit in high altitude environments.
In Colombia, this coffee also represents the work of 40 women farmers from Huila whose farms range from 1 to 5 hectares at elevations of 1,500 to 1,600 metres. The coffees are produced through a women's association led by Ana Gloria Rodriguez. These farmers cultivate varieties such as Castillo, Colombia and Caturra and are deeply committed to quality and to the land they farm.
The project also honours the long tradition of female coffee pickers in Colombia, known as Chapoleras. Their striking white clothing once became a symbol of the harvest season. As they moved across the hillsides, they were said to resemble seagulls, or "Gaviotas" in Spanish, which inspired the name of the project.
Together these coffees highlight the passion, resilience and expertise of women producers who continue to shape the future of specialty coffee while honouring its heritage.
